Discography and Biography of
René Innemee and The Walkers

Jean Innemee formed The Walkers in 1966. First Jean played with The Swing Stars, but January 16th 1960 he was on stage the first time with The Mosam Skiffle Group (in d'Oude Smidse in Valkenburg). This skiffle group was formed by Martin Vrijens (vocals and bandleader), Henry Nafzger (solo guitar), Willy Beusen (guitar and banjo) and front-man Jean Innemee (standing bass). February 1960 they had their first radio performance and June 25th 1960 they won a talent scouting in which 400 bands participated. The contest was broadcasted on Dutch TV. Number 2 were Maddy Bleize and his Comets. (Later on this Maddy Bleize will join The Walkers). The Mosam Skiffle Group, without a drummer, was very popular in Holland at a time when Rock and Roll was king.

The first international hit was 'Down On The Brazos/The Day It All Began' and from this time on they were in the picture in Germany, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Scandinavian countries.

Because of the audience's wishes to play more rhythmic songs on stage, Jack Innemee, second cousin of Jean (and René being still a child at the moment), joined the band as drummer. But, despite all the success, the band members more and more preferred to be a dance band. For this reason The Mosam Skiffle Group disbanded and continued as The Walkers. April 1964 they were on stage the first time and the new cast was formed by:

Jean Innemee, (double) bass, vocals (*October 14th 1937)
Martin Vrijens, playing clarinet, guitar, vocals
(-)Jack Innemee, percussion [(-) means this person has left the band in the next composition]
(-)Henry Nafzger, guitar, banjo, mandolin (later on also member of the Mosam Skiffle Train)
(-)Fred Limpens, trumpet, guitar, Hawaiian guitar, vocals (later on he made several records as Freddy Cash)
(-)Peter Limpens, alt-saxophone, clarinet, keyboards.

Typical for the Walkers is the use of exotic instruments on stage like bouzouki (often played by René Innemee, Jean's younger brother), lutchy and kazoo, but also banjo, accordion, saxophone, clarinet, Panpipe, piano, trombone and trumpet.

This still amateur band is that successful that they are also asked very often as support band for well-known Dutch artists. Because of the success The Walkers become professionals in 1967, but without the Limpens brothers, which are replaced by Maddy Bleize (well known lead singer of 'The Flames' and often called 'the Dutch Elvis Presley' at that time), Leo Steinbusch and Hammy Lipsch.

So, in 1967, the band consisted of:

Jean Innemee, (double) bass, vocals
(+)Maddy Bleize, vocals, percussion and accordion (January 9th, 1941); often called ‘the Dutch Elvis Presley' [(+) means new member]
(+)Leo Steinbusch, trumpet, bass and vocals (April 7th, 1943)
(+)(-)Hammy Lipsch, saxophone, clarinet and flute
(-)Martin Vrijens, playing clarinet, guitar, vocals

Playing in 1900-outlook and since 1968 also presenting a Greek show, they were on stage almost every day, amusing an audience having a party or a celebration.

In the meantime the first single was recorded in 1969 (‘Moeder’), but it was no hit. In 1970 they produce the Dutch version of ‘Mademoiselle Ninette’ and the German version of George Baker's ‘My Dear Ann’ for the Dutch record-company ‘Telstar’. Both sold well.

Martin Vrijens and Hammy Lipsch got more and more problems with playing night after night in dancings and nightclubs and decided to leave the band in 1970. They were replaced by Adrie Koenen and Conny Peters.
This 1970 cast is responsible for the first self composed Walkers LP 'Skiffle Train' (with recording engineer ex-Walkers Fred Limpens) and consists of:

Jean Innemee, (double) bass, vocals, mouthorgan, guitar
Maddy Bleize, vocals, percussion, washboard and accordion
Leo Steinbusch, trumpet, bass, guitar and vocals
(+) (-)Adrie Koenen, leadguitar, bouzouki, vocals
(+)Conny Peters, piano, accordion, flute, lutchy (Indian flute), kazoo and vocals (*November 13th, 1947)

In November 1970 'There’s No More Corn On The Brasos' is released as single, reaching number 4 in the national charts in March 1971 and turning Gold in May 1971. More than one million singles are sold worldwide, reaching number one in Brazil, 2 in Luxembourg and 3 in France.
The song is originally the so called "traditional", "No More Cane On The Brazos". The word "Cane" has been replaced by "Corn" by Jean Innemee. The songwriter is not known but the lyrics have been written around 1910. The melody comes from an African song and was brought to America by slaves. The song tells about prisoners working outside the prison on a chain gang and was sung during chopping sugarcane (slave labour along the river Brazos that runs through Texas). There are several of artists, such as Ian Gillan, former singer of Deep Purple, Bob Dylan and Lonnie Donegan who have made their own version of the song but none of them were as successful as The Walkers.

'My Darling Helena' is released as second single, followed by the successful long player with the same name, containing the third single 'Who Killed The Fish In The Michigan Lake'. This third single, just as the fourth  "Sister Joanne", aren't that successful, but "Taboo" is a hit again during the summer of 1972. In September 1972 the first 'Best Of' is released. Inside the group the discussion about the near future arises. The result is a quiet period of time and Adrie Koenen leaving, who is replaced by Jean Innemee's younger brother René Innemee (born May 17th, 1951 and since the disbanding of his band 'Fresh Garbage' working as road manager for The Walkers). In 1971 René Innemee had been the singer of ‘Fresh Garbage’. They recorded 1 single with the songs "Milly" and "Put van Vrouw Holle". Both songs were played on radio, but not a commercial success.

During the summer of 1973 the fifth Walkers single, 'Dance Of Love' (still in the old Walkers style), is a hit again. In Germany, the Adam & Eve cover-version ('Komm Und Tanz Mit Mir') sells even better than the original version.

With the voice-possibilities of René, The Walkers change their style, reminding the audience of the hits of Creedence Clearwater Revival, and score 2 big international hits with "Oh Lonesome Me" and "Jack Of Diamond". As a result the LP "Family Reunion" is released, followed by 40 international TV-appearances within 3 years.

Now, The Walkers consist of:

Maddy Bleize, vocals, percussion, washboard and accordion
Leo Steinbusch, trumpet, bass, guitar and vocals
Conny Peters, piano, accordion, flute, lutchy (Indian flute), kazoo and vocals
Jean Innemee, bassguitar, vocals, mouthorgan, guitar
René Innemee, guitar, dobro, banjo, steelguitar, bouzouki and vocals.

Occasionally the Walkers left their style and performed as area musicians. An example of this is released on the LP "Vastelaovend in Limburg" (Telstar TFA 14913KL), released to support the museum of Carnaval in Limburg (the southern part of the Netherlands). Beside The Walkers, also The Classics and Rainbow are on this LP. The song “Vaan Eysde tot de Mookerhei” was written by Jean Innemee and became a classic Carnaval hit.
René also joined in to achieve the next LP: De boonte störrem raos!!! (1977 / Discofoon DLP 4077.8 1995) "Twie groete plate vol mèt vastelaovendleedsjes vaan vreuger, vaan gister, mer ouch de lèste nuij". Produced by: Conny Peters and Jean Innemee. Musicians: René Innemee, Pierre Beckers, Erwin Musper, Ab van Goor, Wiel Dirx and Mattie Eikenboom.

After The Walkers period each of the members went his own way and continued making music. They all often played as session musicians, b.e. in 1980 on the LP Sweet Surprise of 'Mr. Kojak' Telly Savallas (Arcade ADE-H-63). Floor Minnaert, René Innemee, Michel Nita, John Coenen, Hans Minnaert and Conny Peters were all present here. The same musicians played on Ben Steneker's LP "Take A Ride In The Country With Me", Killroy KIL 19018 KL (1982). Furthermore René accompanied together with i.a. Michel Nita and Conny Peters, Lex Nelissen on his LP "Let Me Cover You", Marlstone 098820 (1988).

In the same period (late 80's) René joined in the CD "Miracles", Marlstone CDL (a country-gospelproject of Dick van Altenea) with the song "You've Been Easy On Me".

René Innemee played in quite a lot of bands like: Spinner, Soul (film project), Fandango, Pepperbox, Dance! Dance! and Johnny Walker & The Jack Daniels Band.
In 1986 Dance! Dance! changed their name back to The Walkers again. The line-up was:

René Innemee: guitar, vocals
Michel Nita: guitar, trumpet, vocals
Conny Peters: keyboards, saxophone, flute, vocals
André Smit: bass
Loek van Heijster: drums

With Spinner, Dance! Dance!, The Press, Ray T. Jones, Lafayette, Three Of A Kind and The Revival Band he released records again. But he also produced records, b.e. the solo LP of his brother Jean 'Niks veur Hollènders' (Marlstone 19827). This solo album of Jean Innemee only contains songs of the German group The Bläckföös, but the lyrics are in Maastricht's dialect.
On the Marlstone CD "Duètte Beppie & Vrun" (CDL7949) René Innemee sings a duet with Beppie Kraft, well known in the Maastricht area as singer, but also member of the board of directors of Marlstone. It is called "Ligk neet te zeivere", translated as “Don’t Nag”. But also his older brother Jean sings a in duet with Mrs. Kraft on this CD. They perform the song "Abraham en Saar". Jean felt attracted to the typical Maastricht area music which can be heard on the LP’s "Veur Brouwers, Bekkers en Aandere Mestreechtenere" (Telstar 14948), "Niks veur Hollènders" (Marlstone 19827; as CD CDL 9233) and the CD "Tradities (van Jonkheid tot Meikeuningin)" (Marlstone CDL 9616).

On the occasion of Rock Around The Werft (21-03-2009) the organization compiled a CD with songs of the participating bands of this event. Besides tracks with The Shakin'Arrows, Crazy Cadillac and Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, the CD also featured these songs by René & The Revival Band:
12. Hey Tonight
13. Who'll Stop The Rain
14. Have You Ever Seen The Rain
15. I Put A Spell On You
16. Lodi

Bert Bessems also played in:  Windmill, Partner, Vogue, The Run and Fandango

Peter Groenendal played in: Rainbow, Pepperbox, and Dance! Dance!

Pierre Beckers played in: Opus (23), The Sharons, Spinner, Windmill, Partner, The Run and Fandango
(Opus existed twice. Two musicians of the Sharons, Pierre Beckers and the nowadays in Florida and California living very successful producer/sound engineer Erwin Musper, and former (old) Opus musician Jo Robeers formed the "new" Opus. It was this "new" Opus that had a hit with the country song Ohio Sun.)

Berni Bovens, as a professional musician, has played in so many bands and with so many artists.

Conny Peters played in: Ray T. Jones, Spinner, Pepperbox, Dance! Dance!, The Original DT's, Carboon, The Moonlight Riders and Fandango

Michel Nita played in: The Press, Pepperbox, Dance! Dance!, The Original DT's and The Moonlight Riders

Loek van Heijster played in: The Moonlight Riders

In The Press mostly Walther Nita did leadvocals, but also René Innemee did. All songs they produced were written by one of The Press members.

The Press are:

René Innemee: guitars and leadvocals
E. Floor Minnaert: keyboards/woodwinds
Wil Bronzwaer: drums
Walther Nita: leadvocals
Michel Nita: horns/guitars
John Coenen: bass

The manager was René's older brother Jean.
